Alpha Numeric - alpha numeric means that both letters and numbers are displayed.

Cashier Interrrupt (or Clerk Interrupt) - a function which allows one operator to ring in a sale depsite an exisitng sale being left open on the till by a fellow cashier. Most commonly used in bars, pubs, restaurants etc

Customer Rear Display - the display on the back of the cash register designed for the customer. Remeber not all cash registers have a customer rear display. Some of those that do have a rear display on show digits whereas others will also show a product description. Some rear displays are pop up and some are fixed.

Departments - departments are categories of product. On retail, raised keyboard cash registers tend top have department buttons laid out numerically allowing open (variable amount) sales to be processed. Departments can be used to helop you understand what you have been selling - as some cash registers allow you to produce a department report. Departments can also be used to help control the vat or tax on sales. For example, you could sell a range of products which attarct diffrerent amounts of vat. The easiest way to account for the tax could be to assign different tax rates to the relvant deprtments. The number of departments on a cash register can vary from as few as 8 to as many as 200.

Hot keys - one touch product buttons normally associated with a flat keyboard 'hospitality' cash register as used in pubs, cafes, bars etc

PLU - price or product look up. I.e: an individual product. PLU's are used for quick entry and accurate tracking of frequently sold items. Once programmed, the user punches in the PLU code (e.g. 99) on the keypad and then presses the "PLU" button. Depending on the specific cash register the PLU name and price will appear on screen and on the receipt.

Table tracking - allows for a sale to be assigned to a table, check or customer then laid away and added to without affecting other sales. Table tracking is useful if you are happy for your guests to pay at the end of service, rather than everytime then order.

X Report - an X report is a non-resetting read only report.

Z Report - a Z report is a resetting report.
